Refractory Materials

High quality raw materials coupled with seamless supply are critical to any investment casting facility.

Investment Casting Supplies has a comprehensive range of materials within our portfolio, including sands, flours, binders, and additives.

As well as providing several off the shelf materials we also work with you to customize materials to meet your exact requirements, all of our materials are subject to regular testing on items including thermal dilation, thermal conductivity, permeability, density, refractoriness and particle size distribution.

Refractory Sands

Fused Alumina

Fused alumina (also known as corundum or aluminium oxide) is the family name for inorganic compounds with the chemical formula Al2O3. Alumina is a dense material produced from bauxite. The product has a low iron content making it particularly valuable in refractory and investment casting applications.

Zircon Sand

Zirconite® is a natural mineral product, calcined at high temperature. It is a pure zirconium silicate, known as “zircon” available in various grain sizes. Zirconite® is used in the production of refractories, foundry coatings and ceramic shell systems within the investment casting sector.

Zirconite Premium®

Zirconite Premium® is a natural mineral product, calcined at high temperature, and milled down to fine flour size. It is a pure zirconium silicate available in various grain sizes. Zirconite Premium® is a higher quality zircon with lower alumina and iron content then our standard zircon materials. Zirconite Premium ® is ideally suited to producing very complex, thin-walled investment castings

Fused Silica

used silica is high purity quartz sand that has been melted to form glass. Our fused silica has an extremely low thermal expansion coefficient, consistent chemistry and carefully controlled particle size distribution. Fused silicas from Investment Casting Supplies has been optimised for use within the foundry, refractory and investment casting sector.

Mullite Sand

Mullite material supplied by Investment Casting Supplies is of the highest quality. Mullite is an excellent, low-cost refractory material with a nominal composition of Al2O3 and SiO2.
Mullite demonstrates excellent high temperature properties with excellent thermal shock and thermal stress properties.

Molochite

Molochite is a pure white man-made granular material. It is produced by firing raw low-iron kaolin to very high temperatures to bring about maximum conversion of the clay crystals to crystalline mullite (usually > 95%). Its high refractoriness is harnessed in foundries, refractory, and investment casting applications.

Zircalu®

Zircalu® is a product of mineral origin that is a high-quality zircon-alumina compound often used in place of products such as mullite. Zircalu® combines the excellent properties of minerals such as zircon and alumina to make it an ideal product for use in refractories, foundries, and investment casting applications.

CastBall®

CastBall® demonstrates low thermal expansion, granulometric size distribution, High permeability, High strength, and thermal stability that allows the casting of complex parts with thin wall sections. This material is becoming the preferred option over chromite sand and silica sand due to it eliminating the health hazards usually associated with crystalline silica exposure.

Kaolin Clay

Kaolin clay is used for manufacturing several investment casting products including castables, kiln furniture, crucibles, ceramic cores, and ceramic fibre products. Kaolin demonstrates high refractoriness, high volume density, low dust content, excellent thermal expansion coefficient and excellent chemical stability.

Refactory Additives

Ammonium Alginate

Ammonium alginate dissolves in cold and hot water to form a viscous aqueous solution, and gels when in contact with polyvalent cations. A characteristic of ammonium alginate is that it does not contain metal ions such as sodium, so it has a very low ash content. In the investment casting sector, it is used as a binder that leaves no residue after combustion.

SuperSoft AF®

SuperSoft AF® antifoam is a surfactant, insoluble in the foaming medium and has surface active properties. Antifoam products from Investment Casting Supplies demonstrate low viscosity and spreads rapidly on foamy surfaces. Antifoam is often used when creating primary coats for investment casting shell system slurries.

Cobalt Aluminate

Cobalt aluminate is produced by sintering cobalt oxide with aluminium oxide. It is extremely stable and historically it has been used as a colouring agent in ceramics. Cobalt aluminate is often used to create primary shell slurry to improve the surface grain of superalloy investment castings.

SilicaCast®

SilicaCast® is a colloidal silica that is a stable and a versatile material, this versatility allows colloidal silica to form the basis of investment casting ceramic shell systems.

EthySol®

EthySol® is a chemically heterogeneous mixture that is an ester of silicic acid and ethyl alcohol, Ethyl silicate is commonly used as a binder for the production of ceramic shells within the investment casting industry, the use of Ethyl silicate delivers improved drying times for ceramic shells and investment cast moulds.

SuperSoft WA®

SuperSoft® is a wetting agent, (also referred to as a surfactant) is a chemical substance that increases the spreading and penetrating properties of a liquid by lowering its surface tension. Often used in a backup slurry, wetting agents improve the wetting of the refractory and improve the penetration of the slurry into the primary shell layer.

IC-IOB® Biocide

IC-IOB® is a broad-spectrum preservative and dry film fungicide that is effective against a wide range of fungal organisms. IC-IOB® has been specially formulated using a combination of molecules to give best preservation and protection to investment casting slurries over prolonged periods of time. IC-IOB® does not contain any organo-metallic compounds and is compatible with aqueous and solvent based shell system formulations.

Further Materials

Vermiculite

Vermiculite when subjected to thermal shock has the capacity to expand by 10 to 15 times its volume. Vermiculite shows strong fire resistance, thermal and acoustic insulation, cation exchange and absorption properties. Vermiculite is often used in fireproofing, insulation, metallurgy and foundries.

Chromite

Chromite is a dense, inert, refractory ultrabasic magma rock with low coefficients of expansion and thermal conductivity. Chromite is used in ceramics, chemistry, foundries, friction, metallurgy, and refractory products.

Mica-Soft®

Mica is a naturally crystalline, translucent mineral found in granitic rocks and kaolin clays. It demonstrates excellent temperature resistance, mechanical strength, flexibility, and high chemical resistance. Mica is often used in mould release agents, drilling, welding electrodes, coatings, foundries, and sound-absorbing coating.

Calcined Alumina

Our calcined alumina has been developed using a unique process to deliver exceptional grain size control. This material is actively used in the production of precision refractory products and precision engineered ceramics.

Tabular Alumina

Tabular Alumina is aluminium oxide that has been heated to temperatures above 1,650 oC. Composed of tablet-like crystals, it has high heat capacity and excellent thermal conductivity, our tabular alumina material also demonstrates exceptional strength and volume stability at elevated temperatures.

Fused Spinel

Fused spinel is one of the most resistant refractory compounds on the market today. It demonstrates low thermal working temperature, outstanding refractoriness, excellent thermal and chemical stability.

Bubble Alumina

The main constituent of bubble alumina is high-quality alumina powder, the material is melted through an electric arc furnace and air cooled. This creates a light weight, dense, high temperature resistant product. It is mostly used within high temperature furnaces and as an insulation material or in the use of aggregate for high temperature refractory castables.

Magnesium Oxide

Magnesium oxide nanoparticles are odourless and non-toxic. They possess high hardness, high purity, and a high melting point. Magnesium oxide nanoparticles appear in a white powder form. Magnesium oxide nanoparticles are often applied in electronics, ceramics, petrochemical products, coatings, and several other industrial fields.

Rayon Fibres

These short cut ceramic and casting fibres provide excellent secondary reinforcement results for crack control, high temperature regulation, and increased impact resistance. For casting and ceramic industries, our fibres and flocks are perfect for ensuring the highest quality finish and performance.
